Robert was born in East Liverpool, Ohio on June 12, 1921 and was the oldest of three children. He received a Bachelor's of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Ohio University prior to entering the Army in March 1943. He was part of an engineering-aviation battalion that constructed air bases in the Pacific Theater. Following his service, he was an Assistant Professor of Engineering at the University of Texas in Austin, where he obtained a Master's in Civil Engineering.
He worked for Amoco Oil for 30 years and retired as a supervisor of engineering in Chicago, Il, in 1982 at which time he and Jeannette retired to Laurel Park, NC. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hendersonville, a volunteer for the Laurel Park Zoning Board of Adjustment for 17 years, a former member of the Civitan Club and the Hendersonville Country Club.
Robert is survived by a sister, Helen Kastrenakis of Florida, three sons: Robert E. Apple, Jr. and his wife Dorothy of Danville, Kentucky, Paul E. Apple of Horse Shoe, and David A. Apple and his wife Robin of Hendersonville, NC, four grandchildren: Lisa Smiley, Nathan Apple, Quincey Apple and Lorraine Apple, and three great grandchildren: Olivia Smiley, Taylor Apple, and Kennedy Apple.
A Memorial service will be held at a future date at the First Presbyterian Church Chapel in Hendersonville.
