Mrs. E. Earl(Isabel) Kanaga, 78, of 80 Woolnough St., sister of the late U.S. Rep. Paul W. Shafer of the 3rd District, died Saturday at Leila Hospital. She had been a patient there since Nov. 12 and had been ill two and one-half years.
Mrs. Kanaga was born in Indiana and moved to Battle Creek from Three Rivers in 1917. She had been a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority since 1933, and was honored with the group's International Order of the Rose citation.
Mrs. Kanaga was a member of First Congregational Church and president of its Jesse Galloup Circle, member of the Women's League, member of the Battle Creek poetry Society, and served on the board of Family Counseling service.
Her former affiliations included Campfire Girls board, Bluebird leadership, and as a Red Cross Gray Lady at the Veterans Administration Hospital. She was a board member of the Emily Andrus Home and for five terms was president of that board.
Another prominent brother of Mrs. Kanaga, in addition to the congressman, was the late Chester(Chet) Shafer, a nationally known humorist.
Mrs. Kanaga was former advertising employee of the Moon Journal.
Survivors are the husband; a sister Mrs. Frank B.(Florence) King of Three Rivers; and a son, Kent Kanaga of Battle Creek Township, manager of radio station WKFR.
