H. Earl Kanaga of 80 Woolnough St. retired manager of the Franklin Brass Co. and former president of the Battle Creek Board of Education, died unexpectedly Tuesday at his home. He was 84 on Monday.

He was born in Nashville and as an infant moved to Battle Creek with his parents.

He was employed by the Grand Trunk Western Railroad as the first night ticket clerk in the present passenger station, and later went west where he worked four years for the Santa Fe Railroad, first in Denver, Colo., and then in Phoenix, Ariz. At the time of his father's death he returned to Battle Creek and went to work for Advance-Rumely Co. in 1918, when Meyer Franklin opened the Brass Co. on South Ave., Mr. Kanaga became manager, remaining there until his retirement in 1958.

Mr. Kanaga was a member of the Battle Creek Elks Lodge, serving as exalted ruler in 1925 and later as treasurer and trustee. He also was a member of the Rotary Club for many years. In 1937 he was elected to the Board of Education and during his eight years on the board served as secretary and treasurer as well as two terms as president. He also served several terms on the Calhoun County Tax Allocation Board.

His wife, the former Isabel Shafer, sister of late Rep. Paul W. Shafer, died in January of this year. Surviving are a son, by his marriage to the former Miss Adaline Sines, Richard Kent Kanaga, and a sister Mrs. Blanche Perry, both of Battle Creek.
