Edward H. Free (Eddie), 81, a Village of Cleveland resident passed away on Monday, March 28, 2016 at Aurora Medical Center in Two Rivers.

Eddie was born on December 4, 1934 to the late William and Marie (Nisleit) Free in the Town of Newton. Eddie attended grade school at Elm Grove School and Trinity Lutheran School. He graduated in 1953 from Valders High School, where he excelled at wrestling, and was the first wrestler to qualify for State. On October 27, 1956, Eddie married the love of his life, Gerty Stockmeier. Together they enjoyed traveling and spending time in Arizona for spring training.

Eddie's first job was as a milk truck driver for Elmer Nack Trucking. In 1956 Eddie began his career as a John Deere mechanic at the Cleveland Co-op. When the Co-op closed the John Deere division in 2004, Eddie went to work at Miller Implement in St. Nazianz. Eddie was a dedicated volunteer. He was a member of the Newton Fire Dept. and after moving to Cleveland, he joined the Cleveland Fire Dept. He served as Fire Chief for Cleveland from 1978 to 1988. Under his leadership the First Responders were organized, Cleveland being one of the first departments to offer First Responder services. Eddie was a CPR instructor for the American Red Cross for many years. He was an active member of the Lakeshore Disaster Support Group during its 25 year existence. After retirement, Eddie enjoyed volunteering at Holy Family Hospital in Manitowoc. Eddie enjoyed playing dartball in the church dartball league. He was also an avid fan of the Cleveland Wildcats baseball team. Eddie also loved to watch his grandson Cody wrestle for the Oostburg schools. Eddie was a member of St. Mark's UCC, Cleveland, where he served in various positions over the years.

Eddie is survived by his wife, Gerty, his daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Loren Horswill and his grandson Cody Horswill, Hingham, a brother and sister-in-law, Elwood and Denise Free, Newton, and their children Bill and Marlena. He is preceded in death by his son Terry, and his infant grandchildren Scott and Christine Horswill.

Funeral services for Eddie, will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, April 1, 2016, at St. Marks UCC, N9286 Dairyland Drive, Cleveland. Rev. William Kesting will officiate and burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery in Town Centerville. Friends may call at the CHURCH on Thursday, March 31, 2016 from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. and on Friday, April 1, 2016 from 9:30 A.M. until the hour of service. Burial services at the Cemetery will be held on Friday April 1, 2016 at 1:30 P.M.

The Stoltenberg Funeral Chapel, Cleveland, is assisting the family with these funeral arrangements.

A memorial fund has been established in Eddie's name.
