Information board:
Bishop Joseph Allen
Bishop of Ely 1836-1845
Bishop Allen and his wife are buried at the East end of the Cathedral. Originally their grave was beneath an intricate slab made of leftover materials from Napoleon's tomb in Les Invalides. Unfortunately, it was unable to withstand the many visitors' feet passing over it and it deteriorated so badly that it was removed in 1953. This monument, which is taken from a portrait, is thought to be a good likeness of him.

In her Will, his daughter Ellen left £500 to the Dean and Chapter on condition that she be buried in the grave of her parents. They used the money to construct the pulpit in the Octagon and the ornate flight of steps leading up to it.
