Frances Adeline Miller was the daughter of Judge Elijah Miller and Hannah Foote Miller. She married William Henry Seward, Sr. in 1824 who was Governor of New York (1839–1843) and Secretary of State under Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson (1861-1869). They had five children: Augustus Henry, Frederick William (Assistant Secretary of State 1861-1869, 1877-1879) Cornelia, Brig. Gen. William Henry, Jr. and Frances "Fanny" Adeline as well as one adopted daughter, Olive.
On April 14, 1865 her family was attacked by assassin Lewis Powell a.k.a. Paine in their home. Secretary of State William Seward and Assistant Secretary Fred Seward where seriously injured along with Augustus, Fanny, Sgt. George F. Robinson (her husband's care taker) and Emerick Hansell (a messanger). President Abraham Lincoln was also shot the same day by John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln died the next morning. Frances went into a state of shock and worry over the resent events and died two months later.
Lewis Powell was executed for his crime July 7, 1865.
