Matilda Augusta Braddock was born in Bedford, Bedfordshire, England on the 28th of August 1828. She was the seventh of ten children born to Thomas Dunn Braddock (1780 to 1835) and Ann Read (1792 to 1872).

Matilda is listed in the 1841 English Census for St. Paul, Bedfordshire, England.

After the death of her father and six of her siblings, Matilda, her mother, and two siblings immigrated to the United States. In late October 1843 hey boarded the steam ship, Champion, in Liverpool, England, for a journey that would last six and one-half weeks. This ship was chartered by the Mormon Society. Two more of her sisters came over separately.

The family arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana, on the 6th of December 1843. Matilda, her mother and sister then traveled to Nauvoo, Illinois where they lived for several years. During this time Matilda, at the age of 17, married into a polygamist marriage with Henry Royle on the 23rd of January 1846. This was just two days after her mother was married to Willard Richard. The extended family became part of the Willard Richard’s Company move to Utah, and after spending one winter at the “Winter Headquarters,” arrived in Utah in 1848.

Eventually Matilda left Utah when her mother made arrangements to smuggle her out of the state by paying a farmer to hide her under a load of hay. At that time it was against the law for women to leave the area. Matilda's mother and younger sister remained in Utah. Matilda moved to St. Louis where her brother and at least one sister were already living.

Matilda Augusta Braddock married Joseph Roy on the 22nd of January 1849 In St. Louis, Missouri. Joseph, born on the 12th of March 1824 in Carondelet, was the son of Henry Francois Roy (1794 to 1831) and Ulalie Vien (1801).

They became the parents of eight children, three of whom died in infancy.

Children of Joseph Roy and Matilda Braddock:
1. Joseph Roy (1853 to after 1880)
2. unnamed Roy (1856 to 1856)

7. Belle Rita Roy (1867 to 1936) married Charles Edgar Wallis
8. Thomas William Roy (1869 to 1943) married Mary Etta Sawyer

In the 1857 Missouri State Census, the Joseph Roy family lived between two Henry Roy families. One of these families would have been his father, the other his older brother.

The 1858 Missouri State Census listed the family in St. Louis, St. Louis Ward 1, Missouri. Besides the parents, two children were listed. This is the only record which provides Matilda’s middle name.

The 1860 census for Carondelet, St. Louis, Missouri listed the Roy family which included the parents and their son, Joseph. Three of their children had already passed away. Their neighbors were the John Roy family, Joseph’s older brother.

The 1870 census for Carondelet, St. Louis, Missouri listed the Roy family which consisted of both parents and five children. Joseph’s occupation and his eldest’s son were both listed as laborers. It was this census that gave the complete first names of the young daughters. Euphrosyne and Alfred attended school. Joseph Roy could read but not write.

Matilda Augusta Braddock died on the 11th of October 1870 in St. Louis, Missouri, at the age of forty-two. She and Joseph had been married for twenty-one years. She was buried at the Sigerson Farm Cemetery, which was the protestant section of Mount Olive Cemetery.
