A Fatal Accident

Wm. Tilton Thrown from a Wagon and Fatally Injured

Yesterday an accident occurred which resulted in the death of Wm. Tilton. Mr Tilton, exercising the horse of Phill Kuhl, the barber, and while engaged in a friendly brush with Edward Fenton and a Mr. Bennett. Mr Tilton’s wagon collided with that of John Fenton, who was some distance ahead of the three wagons when the trot began. Mr. Tilton was thrown from the wagon and struck upon the side of his head. He was picked up insensible and taken home. Drs. Field and Warner were called in, but at ten o’clock Mr. Tilton died without having regained consciousness. Death was due to compression of the brain, and effusion of blood, one of the arteries of the brain having been ruptured by the shock.

After the collision Mr. Kuhl’s horse reared up, and in it’s descent, one of the shafts struck Mrs. Bennett, who was in the wagon with her husband. Her dress was considerably torn , but she was not injured. Mr Kuhl’s horse then ran to Rector Place, where the animal was captured.

Mr Tilton was 74 years of age. He leaves a wife and several children. The funeral will be held at Trinity Church, Red Bank, on Friday afternoon at half-past two o’clock.
