Freddy Schenk was the son of Walter and Ruth Merriman Schenk. He was my mother's brother and only lived until his fourth birthday. While waiting for the family in their car, he climbed out of the driver's seat window to show off his new birthday suit and was killed by a speeding car. When he died my grandmother was so filled with grief, she stayed in bed for a week, then got up and resumed her life. Because of his condition he was cremated and buried with his mother when she passed away in 1945. In the photo Freddie is the smallest child near the bottom step with my Mother's arms around him. My mother was always looking out for him and felt much guilt after his death because she was not there to protect him. I have been reminded recently how much he was loved and how much he has been a part of our lives because my mother's love and memories of him. We will meet him one day.
