He claimed 200 acres of land in the Ocoee Land District, south of the Hiwassee and Tennessee rivers, near present day Cleveland, entered 1840-42. He reportedly lived the latter part of his life in Catoosa Co., GA and is thought to be buried in a cemetery in the little town of Apison, Hamilton, Tennessee. William is listed in the 1830 Monroe County, TN census as a Free White Person, age 30-40 with a wife, age 30-40; a son and daughter, both under 5 and, an unnamed woman, age 20-30 in the household. "Abstracts of Ocoee District Land Records - Entries" lists three claims for William M. Stephenson and 2, perhaps 4 for William's brother, Andrew.
