Died A good man gone Home

Last Saturday morning J. W. Stephenson, who lived three miles southeast of Hope for many years and was in his 72nd year quietly "fell on sleep," and was buried Sunday afternoon. He came from Tennessee to this county in 1849, and settled in 1862, on the farm where he died. He and his father-in-law, Mr. Taylor, gave the Iron Mountain 100 acres of land as an inducement to build a depot on its present site at Hope.

Mr. Stephenson was well known throughout this section and enjoyed the love and esteem of all. He was a devout Christian and a "working member" of the Methodist Church at this place. He passed away in great peace and will live in the memories of his neighbors as a good and useful man.

Obituary, Star of Hope, Hope, Arkansas, May 12, 1900,

In Memoriam Whereas it has pleased an all-wise Providence, with whom are the final issues of life and death to remove from our midst our noble brother and co-worker James W. Stephenson, therefore be it Resolved, that in the death of Brother Stephenson the Masonic fraternity in general and Whitfield Lodge No. 239, F. & A. M., in particular have lost an old, active and faithful member, his widow and children a kind, indulgent and affectionate husband and father, the community an eminently good man and useful citizen, and his neighbors a kind, generous, charitable and neighborly neighbor. Resolved, that we offer the bereaved family our heartfelt sympathy and condolence in their their dire affliction. Resolved, that these resolutions be engrossed and a copy printed to the widow of our departed brother. Resolved, that the members of his lodge wear the customary badge of mourning for thirty days and these resolutions be spread upon our minutes. F. T. Wright, A. A. Gibson, J. R. Sanders
