Asher was born in Maine and traveled down the Erie canal with his family. The family settled in Iowa. Asher and his brother John were very tall men for the time. They traveled with Kit Carson and were hunters for the group. He often told his grandchild of their exploits. Asher settled in Nebraska where he had a ranch and later the family moved to Wiley Colorado. He married Mary Jane McCullough and they had six children. Steven, Arcelia, May, Charles, Elizabeth and James.
