FITZGERALD, Joseph Albert “Papa Joe” – 83, of Comeau’s Hill, Yarmouth Co.,peacefully passed away at home with his family at his side on May 4, 2011. Born on September 24, 1927 in Little River Harbour, he was a son of the late Ralph and Cedulie (Harris) Fitzgerald. He volunteered at the Melbourne Community Centre working BINGO and also in Comeau’s Hill and Wedgeport. Joe’s passion was baseball, both coaching and playing. His greatest reward was playing alongside of his three sons. He enjoyed watching the Toronto Blue Jays. He worked at Pinkney’s Point wharf for many years as a lobster buyer. He is survived by wife, Mary Jordan Goodwin Coppes; daughter, Jo-Anne Fitzgerald (Allen Gannon), Arcadia; sons, Gary Fitzgerald (Pam Surette), Chebogue; Wayne (Virginia) Fitzgerald, Melbourne; Gerry (Jill Marie) Fitzgerald, Arcadia; twin brother, James (Marion), Arcadia; Burton (Ida), Arcadia; Clarence (Marion), Yarmouth; Paul (Joan) and Arthur, both of Little River Harbour; Carl, Eel Brook; David (Vicky), Abram’s River; Bernie (Merna), New Hampshire; Cecil, Melbourne; sisters, Catherine (Carroll) Saulnier, Pinkney’s Point; Lillian MacAskill, Sackville; Barbara (Richard) Muise, Lower Sackville; sister-in-law, Yvonne Fitzgerald, Melbourne; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his former wife and mother of his children, Alice Fitzgerald. He was predeceased by brothers, Willard, Arthur, Lloyd, Delmar and Louis; brother-in-law, Earl MacAskill; and second wife, Nancy. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Yarmouth. Visitation hours will be held Friday May 6, 2011 from 2 to 4 p.m and 7 to 9 p.m with prayers at 8 p.m at Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel. A Funeral mass will take place Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 10 a.m with Father John MacPherson officiating. Interment will follow in St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church Cemetery. Family flowers only, please. Donations in memory may be made to the Victorian Order of Nurses (Tri-County Branch) or to a charity of your choice.
