Robert “Yankee Bob” Schaibley, age 85 of Winchester, passed away April 25, 2016. Mr. Schaibley was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He served in the U.S. Army Infantry Division where he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, pistol Sharpshooter and sub-machine gun Expert. A native of Streator, IL, he had made his home in Franklin County for the past 26 years. He retired from Caterpillar in 1990 following 30 years of service as a Machinist. He was a member of Riva Lake Baptist Church and the Tim’s Ford Bass Club. He made fish hooks and jig heads for his many fishing buddies but most will remember him as a specialist in recycling aluminum cans. His many grandchildren were the light of his life and he found great joy in taking them boating. Mr. Schaibley is preceded in death by his mother, Alana Averwig Schaibley and his father, Oscar Peter Schaibley. Also preceding him in death are two of his brothers, John Schaibley and Arthur Allen Schaibley. He is survived by his adoring wife of 56 years, Lydia Hedrick Schaibley; daughters, Paula Schaibley, Connie (Jeffrey) McKenzie of Geneva, IL, Vickie (Luis) Raices of Worth, IL; David Schaibley of Montana, Richard C. (Linda) Schaibley of Streator, IL and Ronald Schaibley of Ashton, IL; brothers, Donald (Sue) Schaibley of Rockville, IN and Larry Schaibley of Chicago, IL; 18 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Wednesday April 27, 2016 from 12 noon until 1 p.m. The funeral service will be conducted from the chapel of Watson-North Funeral Home at 1 p.m. with Rev. Larry Sanders of Riva Lake Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow at Watson-North Memorial Park with grandsons serving as pallbearers.
