Ada Gallen (Dii duh nil naa), 92, of Northway, Alaska, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 24, 2016. The last of 16 known children of Peter Albert of Nabesna-Barr and Elsie Northway, sister of the late Chief Walter Northway, Ada was born on Dec. 24, 1923. A strong, resourceful Athabaskan woman from her youth in to her Elder years of life, Ada lived a subsistence lifestyle. Hunting and gathering brought her great pleasure and she often took her grandchildren along to teach them the traditional skills and crafts and to instill in them the values of hard work and perseverance. She was an icon of strength, honor and courage, also known to have a stubborn streak in addition to a sense of humor that often surprised people. Her intellect, wisdom and common sense far exceeded her 3rd grade education and she understood the importance of getting an education in both the traditional and western ways. She was also an avid and talented beader, skin-sewer and birch bark basket maker. Ada's smile brought a light to her eyes and a warm spirit to the room and to those she shared it with. Her hospitality and warmth always included a warm traditional meal and place to stay for many visitors to the Northway area. Grandma will be greatly missed by her surviving children, LeRoy, James, Norman and Russ; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many extended family members. She was preceded in death by husband, Jim Gallen; daughters, Rosemarie and Judy; and domestic partner, Winfred Mark. The family will be taking Ada to Northway on Thursday, April 28, 2016, where funeral services will take place on Saturday, April 30, 2016.
