Chico Record (Chico, California) 29 Jan 1935, Tuesday Page 1 (continued): Neighbors Attracted – Her screams brought Ernest L. Parrish, 1625 Oleander Street, John Edwards and Lynn Case, neighbors, to the scene.

Fergus was taken to the Enloe hospital in the Westfall ambulance, were Dr. John Fabian declared him beyond help. He died without recovering consciousness.

According to members of the family, Fergus made a business trip to Oroville yesterday. Upon his return, he went to his room, changed his clothes, and told his mother he was going to burn some rubbish in the back yard before dinner.

When dinner was ready, Mrs. Fergus came to the kitchen door and called her son.

When he failed to reply, she went to the back yard where he was supposed to be burning rubbish, and found him at the garage. Beside him lay his .32 caliber Colt automatic, one chamber fired.

Shot Unheard – No one apparently heard the shot, which, investigators believe, was fired at approximately 6 p.m.

Undersheriff G.B. Lafever and Constables W.G. King and Frank Roohr conducted the investigation.

In answer to their questions Mrs. Harvey Smith of Eleventh Avenue, a sister of Fergus, said the family could give no reason for his apparent suicide.

Mrs. Smith told officers he apparently had been in good spirits when she last saw him, and had been noticeably despondent.

The body is at the Westfall Funeral Home, where arrangements are pending.

Fergus, a native of Missouri, is survived by his sister, Mrs. Smith; his mother, Mrs. Mary Fergus, and a nephew, Cecil Smith of San Francisco.
