Chico Record, Thursday Morning, August 23, 1923, pg 5 col 5: John M. Fergus Dies After Illness of Several Weeks. John Matthew Fergus, prominent retired farmer of this district, passed at his home in Chico Vecino last night at 8:45 following an illness, which has lasted several weeks. Fergus was a native of Missouri. He was born May 13, 1851 and came to this state seventeen years ago, where he chose this city as his future home.
For a number of years he engaged in farming but retired some years ago and took up residence in Chico Vecino.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary B. Fergus, a daughter, Mrs. Iva Smith of Chico, and a son, Frank Fergus of Los Angeles. The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 10:30 from the Bicknell and Moore parlors. Interment will be made in the local cemetery.

John Matthew Fergus, for a number of years a resident of this city, who passed away at his home in Chico Vecino, Wednesday night, will be laid to rest today in the Chico cemetery. The service will be held from the Bicknell and Moore chapel at 10:30, Rev. Adrian Berry of the Baptist church, officiating.
Fergus was a native of Missouri, but had been here for the past seventeen years, where he engaged in farming until recently when he retired. He was born May 13, 1851.
