John Brannon is known to have settled on Cedar Creek where he owned land.

Records of Lelia Brannon as transcribed by Mary Cooper in the 1950s indicate that John Brannon is buried on his farm which passed to Samuel Brannon, a nephew, and was later owned by Harvey Beall and then the younger Harvey Beall (The younger Harvey Beall is referred to as Jr although he was a nephew. The first Harvey Beall married Amanda Melsey Brannon, daughter of Nancy Beall and John G. Brannon, Jr, which may have made her a granddaughter or possibly grandniece to John Brannon, if John G., Jr was the son of John Brannon, as many descendants believed).

According to family tradition, John Brannon came to present-day Gilmer Co (possibly via Randolph Co) from the District of Columbia where he had been a carpenter. According to some sources, he was born there; others assert he was born in Ireland. Several other biographical details remain unresolved.

His wife's name may have been Nancy.

The birth year is approximate and is based on census records, assuming that this John is the same named in those records, which is not confirmed to be the case.

According to Lelia Brannon's records, John Brannon died before his wife, who died around 1835.

The death year used here is a tentative assumption based on this statement. No primary source has been located to support it. The records of Mary Cooper comprise a compilation of information about John Brannon from various descendants in brief narrative form with few named primary sources. These narratives are based on oral tradition and often conflict in details. Lelia Brannon's, however, is the most specific and verifiable. She does not assert a death date for John Brannon, and the one used here should not be accepted uncritically.

There does not appear to be a headstone for him in Beall-Miller Cemetery, which is enclosed by a relatively new fence.

(Note: No relation to Morgrave Bryan or Caren Brannan/Brannon.)

Based on his birth and death dates, this John Brannon had a second wife Sarah (Long) Flenner (1784-1855). Sarah Long, daughter of Rosamond Long (1743-1831) and Margaret DeVault (1749-1791), first married John Lewis Flenner (1784-1814). She had three children with John Lewis Flenner (see memorial for John Lewis Flenner, 215506904). Sarah then married John Brannon on March 16, 1816, in Harrison County, VA. John and Sarah had at least two children: George Brannon and Samuel C. Brannon. They may also have had a daughter Sarah. John's wife Sarah was living with her son Samuel in Jackson County, VA at the time of her death around 1855.
