Lakatos, Melvin Walter

Melvin Walter Lakatos, age 89, of 2017 Menasha Avenue, Manitowoc, entered eternal life on Sunday, May 1, 2016 at Harborview Assisted Living, Manitowoc.

Melvin was born on July 17, 1926 in Branch, son of the late Joseph and Clara (Stradal) Lakatos. He was a graduate of Lincoln High School with the class of 1944. Melvin entered the United States Army in 1946 and proudly served his country during World War II while stationed in the Hawaiian Islands. During his tour of duty with the Army, Melvin played his trombone with the Army Band. After his honorable discharge he returned home to the Manitowoc area. On September 13, 1952 he married Geraldine M. Walters at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Manitowoc. Melvin was employed as an auto technician for almost 40 years with Lauson Chevrolet and then with Maritime Ford from where he retired. He was very dedicated to his profession as a top notch mechanic in the area and was the go to mechanic for anyone who knew him. Melvin faithfully attended St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church until his health began to fail. He loved playing trombone and could pick up any tune and beautifully play a piano from ear. Melvin was proud of his Branch roots and loved his sheepshead card club with his Branch buddies. He had a lifelong interest in hunting in Florence County with his son, grandsons and son-in-law for many years, as well as time and travels spent visiting his out-of-state grandchildren through the years. Melvin enjoyed bowling, golfing, spending time in Door County, and the Green Bay Packers. He was a very kind, hardworking and proud husband, father, grandfather, neighbor and friend. Melvin was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and the American Veterans of Foreign Wars Otto Oas Post #659.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years: Geraldine; one son and daughter-in-law: Thomas and Mary Beth Lakatos, Neenah; two daughters: Sharon Schmitz and special friend, Mitch Henderson, Scottsdale, AZ; Jane and Randy Rhode, Manitowoc; seven grandchildren: Craig (Mallory) Lakatos, Lauren Schmitz and fiance' Tom Bolanos, Liza Schmitz and special friend, Weston Waybill, Michael Schmitz and special friend, Katie Sprague, Michael Rey, Logan (Taylor) Rhode, Brennan Rhode and special friend Libby Spencer, Ross Rhode and special friend, Erin Luedtke; one great grandchild: Avery Lakatos and her unborn brother, Chase who is due to be born in July 2016; one sister: Donna Zipperer, Whitelaw; nieces, nephews along with other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law: Joseph and Alice Lakatos; two sisters and brothers-in-law: Sylvia and Ted Blashka; Edith and Dan Reidy; two brothers-in-law: Leroy Zipperer and Russell Walters; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Alphonse and Anna Walters.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 6, 2016 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic on Waldo, 1121 North 14th Street, Manitowoc. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Dave Beaudry with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be accorded by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Otto Oas Post #659. Relatives and friends may call at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church on Waldo on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. Following the military rites at the cemetery, there will be a luncheon held for relatives and friends at the Harrigan Parkside Gathering Center located on the south property of the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home.
