US Soldier killed at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Pvt Reed enlisted into the US Army on January 2, 1867, at Cincinnati, OH. He was described as 5'9", light hair, gray eyes with a light complexion. His civilian occupation was laborer. On February 10, 1867, Reed was assigned to Company I, 7th US Cavalry Regiment at Ft Riley, Kansas. In October 1868, Reed was a member of General Sully's escort. On January 2, 1872, his enlistment expired at Ft Seward, Dakota Territory. Reed reenlisted and returned to Company I for another five years. During the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Company I was attached to LTC Custer's battalion. Reed was killed during the battle. After the battle most of Company I was found in an area between Calhoun Ridge and Last Stand Hill. Reed's unidentified remains were likely first buried where they had been found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.
