Eldest son of James H. & Susan (Brittain) Ganong, born in Carleton (a former community in West Saint John).

William pursued higher education in Massachusetts about 1885; he graduated from Harvard University (Cambridge, MA) and was Professor of Botany at Smith College (Northampton, MA) 1894-1932.

William was a distinguished cartographer and historian of New Brunswick and authored many publications.

He married twice, first in Boston in 1888 (the year his father died), to Jean Murray CARMAN (1863-1920). His second wife was Anna HOBBET, born in Iowa and 30 years his junior.

William and Anna had two children, William Francis Ganong, Jr. and Anna Ganong (m. Siebel).
