Green Washington Lilly was born in Mercer County, (West) Virginia, about 1828. He was the son of Pleasant Lilly and his second wife Emelia Lydia "Milly" Shrewsbury (1818-1881). Green was 34 years old when he enlisted as a private at Mercer County on September 13, 1862, and was mustered into Company B, 23rd Battalion, Virginia Infantry. Private Lilly was listed as on leave February 18, 1863. He was later transferred to Company G. Private Lilly was paroled out of Confederate military service on May 11, 1865. He was described at enlistment as being 5' 10" tall with blue eyes and light hair. Green was a resident of Wyoming County when he married (1) Lurena Prince (1831 Mercer Co.-1880) in Raleigh County on October 23, 1865. Lurena was Green's first cousin, the daughter of William Prince (1805-bef. 1865) and his mother's sister Lucy Shrewsbury (1800-aft. 1865). In 1880 Green, Lurena, and their two sons were residents at Slab Fork, Raleigh County (1880 US Census). After Lurena's death later that same year he married (2) Lizzie Bolen.

AGED CITIZEN DEAD
Green Lilly, one of the oldest citizens of the county, died at his home at Odd last week, and was buried on Saturday [Oct 26] in the Odd cemetery. He was about 80 years of age, and practically all his life had been spent in the section of the county where he died. He is survived by two sons, William R. Lilly and John Lilly, both of whom reside on the home place.
