Artemissa Hickman was born 27 Dec 1820 in Avaton, Warren County, KY. Her parents were Elliott Hickman and Nancy Isbell, who had 11 children. Artemissa married Jonathan Reynolds on 16 December 1847, and they had 9 children. Jonathan died in 1864 (killed by Bushwhackers), and in 1869 she & eight children traveled by wagon to Lawrence County, MO, where many members of her family had previously moved. Her daughter Sarah Frances kept a brief diary of the 6-week journey, in which she chronicled:

"January, the 29th, 1869 we left home. Went through Shakertown, Warren County, the 30th. Auburn, Logan County, the 30th. Russellville, the 31st. Elklon, Logan County, the 31st. Hopkinsville, Christian County, February 4. Dadiz, Trigg County, the 6th. We crossed the Cumberland River at Canton (Trigg County) the 7th; the Tennessee River at Agenes Maschel, Wainsburg, Mayfield, Graves County. Then we crossed the Mississippi River at Cairo, the 13th, and then the Saint Frances River at Rue Batems, the 24th. We reached Springfield, Missouri, March the 10th. On March the 12th, we landed in Lawrence County, Missouri."

In the Reynolds genealogy book it says that "Grandmother Hickman" had promised Artemissa 40 acres of land in Missouri, but that "Aunt Nancy" had kept Artemissa's land. Grandmother would have been Nancy Isbell Hickman, and "Aunt Nancy" was Nancy Hickman Hunter.

Artemissa also made blankets on a loom. Her granddaughter Jettie Cochran Orr often heard the story about Artemissa hurrying to finish a blanket which was on the loom (apparently in the yard). She wanted to get it in the house because she heard that bushwhackers were coming through. (This would have been in Warren County, KY.) Aretmissa Hickman Reynolds great granddaughter, Elizabeth Orr Seneker reports having slept on those very blankets -- she described them as scratchy.

The Reynolds genealogy book says that Artemissa died of "acute indigestion," on 27 October 1889. (NOTE: her daughter Sarah Frances Reynolds Cochran died of colon cancer.)
