Geneva Elder, 89, of Mt. Vernon died 12:50 a.m. April 22, 2006, at St. Mary?s Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.
She was a retired teacher.
Ms. Elder was born Dec. 15, 1916, in Raleigh to Ore and Bess (Joyce) Elder.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Logan Street Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon. The Rev. Mike Davis will officiate. Burial will follow in Masonic Cemetery in Raleigh.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon and from 1 p.m. until the service time at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Logan Street Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon.
Ms. Elder is survived by several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Maurine Elder; and an infant sister.
Ms. Elder graduated from Southern Illinois University and attained her master of music degree from Northwestern University in Evanston and her EdS degree from George Peabody College in Nashville, Tenn. She taught for 32 years for the Mt. Vernon city school system, five years at West Frankfort Junior High School and five years at Carrier Mills Grade School. She was a member of the Mt. Vernon Business and Professional Women, was past president of the Alpha chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, and was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Women Teachers, the national Retired Teachers Association, the state of Illinois Retired Teachers Association and the Jefferson County Retired Teachers Association. She was a member of Logan Street Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon.
