Comedienne. Born in Lancashire, to Stanley and Helen Wood, the youngest of four children. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Drama with honors at Birmingham University. Her debut on television was on the talent show, 'New Faces', in 1974, but her big break came on the BBC program 'That's Life!' in 1976 where she met her life long collaborator, Julie Walters. Between 1978 and 1980 she wrote four plays, three of which aired on Granada Television and one on stage. These were then followed by the television series, 'Wood and Walters' for Granada which ran until 1984. It was followed by the comedy series 'Victoria Wood: As Seen On TV', one of her most recognized efforts. She then wrote and starred in the comedy series 'Dinnerladies', which ran for two seasons from 1998. 'Victoria Wood's Big Fat Documentary' appeared in 2004 followed by ITV's 'Victoria Wood - Moonwalking.' In 2005, she wrote a stage musical, 'Acorn Antiques: The Musical!', based on her sketch comedy. She branched out into drama, writing and starring in the 2006 ITV drama, 'Housewife, 49' which earned her two Baftas. She also appeared in the BBC TV adaptation of the children's classic, 'The Borrowers,' in 2011. She continued writing and performing until late 2015, when she was diagnosed with cancer, but kept her illness private. She succumbed some six months later at the age of 62. In a 2005 poll, she was voted 27th out of 50 comedy acts by fellow comedians and comedy insiders. She was the highest-ranked woman on the list. She was the recipient of six British Comedy Awards. She was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1997, and was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2008. She was described as "one of the brightest talents of our generation."
