Dater, Joan Lutz MAHWAH, N.J. Joan Lutz Dater of Mahwah and Pittstown, passed away on June 11, 2016. She was born on September 3, 1942, in the town of Paterson, N.J. She was married to Thomas E. Dater for 49 years. She was the mother to Gretchen Joyce Dater who perished in the Pan Am Flight 103 terrorist attack over Lockerbie Scotland, on December 21, 1988. Also the mother to her son, Christopher Dater. Joan graduated from Keuka College with a bachelor's degree in English journalism. She received a master of arts degree in education from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1978. She attended Drew University majoring in Ministerial Counseling. Joan's first job was with Agricultural Chemicals, a trade magazine where she served as a Washington DC columnist in the field of environmental protection. She went on to work as an advertising copywriter for the Home and Store News. She worked as a part time professor at William Paterson University, Wayne, N.J., School of Communication and Berkeley Business College, West Paterson, N.J. Joan was an avid gardener and spent many years volunteering and working with the Ramsey Area Garden Club. She had a passion for herbs and was instrumental in the creation of the herb garden at the Old Stone House in Ramsey, which her husband Thomas generously donated to the town of Ramsey. Another passion of Joan's was her love of history. She spent years in Washington, D.C. researching everything about George and Martha Washington. She advocated for all the Historical Homes of Bergen County as a member of the Bergen County Historical Society. She graciously donated antique furniture from the Dater Family Estate to The Hermitage of Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J. After many years of Dater newspaper history, Joan helped to arrange at the Mahwah Museum an exhibit on "The Ramsey Journal Newspaper."

After losing her daughter Gretchen, Joan served on the board of Pan Am Flight 103 and became a media relations coordinator in the fight against terrorism. Joan authored a series of newspaper articles, guest editorials, letters to the editor and an article in Syracuse Alumni magazine on the Advocacy efforts of the families of Pan Am Flight 103. She also met with legislators and was persistent in petitioning them to stand with the cause for Pan Am Flight 103. Joan is predeceased by her mother, Stella Lutz (nee Ficon) and father Edward Lutz; her daughter, Gretchen Joyce Dater and her husband Thomas E. Dater.

She is survived by her son, Christopher; her sister, Joyce; and her nephew Scotty; her cousins, Annie and Bobby and her Uncle Walter Lutz.
