Joseph Whitaker Smith died the 19th of June, 2016 in Highland after struggling eighteen years from a cancer related illness.

He was born 8 November 1929 in Salt Lake City to Samuel Schwartz Smith and Jeannette Whitaker Smith.

He married his sweetheart, Beth Park Smith, in the Salt Lake Temple on 6 September 1951 and has been married for sixty-seven years.

He was a member of the LDS Church, where he was Bishop and Stake President, loving the people he served. He was called on four missions, three with his wife.

Joseph taught mathematics in the Granite School District for twenty-five years and also enjoyed farming. For the last twenty years, he has lived in Thatcher, Idaho and has grown to love the people there.

He is survived by his wife, Beth; siblings, Hyrum, John, Esther, Joan, and Gladys; and children, Steven (Raquel), Kathy (Jim), Marianne (Paul), Jody (Randy), Jackie (Brent), Michelle (Ron), Debbie (Ken), Richard (Connie), and Patty (Kyle). He also has seventy grandchildren and 125 great-grandchildren. He was loved by family and friends and we will miss him dearly.

A viewing will be held on Friday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road (1700 West), and Saturday from 9:30-10:45 a.m. in the Valley Park First Ward Building at 4986 South Valois Drive. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
Interment will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
