Spanish Folk Figure. Born in Granada, Andalucia, Spain, she became involved in the cause against the absolutist monarchy of the King Fernando VII. In 1831, she was arrested and accused of conspiracy after a flag with the words "Igualdad, Libertad y Ley"("Equality, Liberty and Law") was discovered in her home. She refused to give the names of her partners and was subsequently executed. Over time, she became a symbol for the cause of Spanish Democracy. Federico García Lorca wrote the play "Mariana Pineda" based in her story.
