Rev. Ed Bailey was born in Eagle Springs, Moore County where his parents served a Methodit curch. He was the son of Rev. Addison Bailey and Lillie Hazel Staley.
He joined the Palestine Methodist Church on the New London Community.
During the second World War he was a member of the First United States Marine Corp, seeing action in the Pacific Theater. During the Battle of Peleliu the commanding office asked he hold service for the soldier during the midst of a battle. He was asked by several soldiers to give them last rites as they died. Afterwards he declared his intentions to become a minister after the war. During his military service he was awarded the Presidential Citation, a Purple Heart and a sharpshooters medal.
He met Mildred Louise Crayton in Albermarle and they were married April 8, 1944. They would have five children, four of whom lived to adulthood.
He graduated from Pfiefer College, Catawba College and Duke Divinity School. He was licensed to preach in 1945 and admitted into the Western North Carolina Conference as an Elder in 1950. He served numerous churches in the Conference and was a District Superintendent. He retired in 1987.
In retirement he became known as The Rose Man, becoming known throughout the horticulture world.
He passed away on Easter morning, a date befitting his life.
