inscription: Gone but not forgotten.

Mary was born in England, the daughter of:
Richard & Lucretia (Unknown) Butcher

She married John H. Makinson on 3 November 1842 in Richmond, Jefferson County, Ohio. They first lived in Steubenville, where their first 4 children were born.

Around 1850, they moved to Mechanicstown, Fox Hollow Township, Carroll County. Somewhere around 1858, they settled in Jackson, Liberty Township, Jackson County, and Mary went on to live out the rest of her days there.

Mary was a strong woman. From November 1861 until September 1862, she raised her 8 children alone, all the while managing the family farm. During this time, her husband was off to war with the Union Army. He returned wounded in the 2nd Battle of Bull Run, and Mary nursed him back to health.

Over the next 20 years, they were able to spend time with their children and grandchildren as well. Although they all married, only James, Thomas & Lucretia went on to have children of their own.

Sadly, Mary passed away the day after the wedding of her daughter, Lucretia. :(

Traditionally, the Makinson's had weddings around Christmas so that out of town family coming for the holiday could attend the wedding. Although, not confirmed, it is suspected that Lucretia moved up her wedding date so that Mary could be there.

John & Mary's children:
William (1843 - unknown after 1860 census)
Sarah Makinson Bailes/Bailiss (1845 - unknown after 1876)
James (1847-1907)
Thomas (1849-1905 [approx])
Mary J. Makinson Riley (1851-1870)
Emily Makinson Alloways Morgan (1854-1942)
John (1858-1912)
Lucretia Makinson Vandevort (1859-1914)
