Jessie was a farmer, a minister, & a tombstone maker. He owned 100 acres that lied on the land of Big Creek, waters of the Red Bird, & the waters of South Fork of the Kentucky River in Clay Co., Ky. On 20 Oct. 1880, Jessie sold his land to Levi Bowing for $200.00. By 1900 Jessie had sold all of his land & at that time according to the census was renting a farm.

The story of Jessie's burial & Mary's Death (as told to Dora Eversole, daughter of Bertha Eversole):

"In 1890 Mary was pregnant with their 20th child. Rans, (Bertha's father) was 18 at the time. Jessie was a mean & stern man. He often disciplined the children with extreme force. One day he was about to hit one of the sons & the son ducked. Mary standing behind the boy took the full force of Jessie's first. Mary being pregnant was unable to recover from the injury. She suffered painfully for several days before her & the child both died.

None of Jessie's children ever forgave him for killing their mother even though it was an accident. In his old age, he became an unkept & unclean man & Rans did not want him around his children. He would run Jessie off anytime he came to the house.
When Jessie died he was put into a pine box as the buried people then. Rans & his brothers were taking him to be buried at Bowling Cemetery at Red Bird where their mother was buried. On the way to the cemetery, they went through the woods carrying Jessie when they all got into an argument about Jessie's grave. According to legend, they set the box down & Rans came home without burying his father.
According to the book written by James E. Welch, Sr. Jessie was buried in the Marcum Cemetery on Upper Elk Creek.

Jessie also fathered the following children, born during the years 1880-1890 (Mother is Mary) (Census for these years are missing): Clarence, John D., Frank, Susanna D., Henry, Zipponah, Logan, Alabama (died 24 Apr. 1894), & Cornellah.
