Hiram was the son of Isaac Cox and Eleanor Coens. He first married Emmaline Steele and they had 11 children. After Emmaline's death, he married Martha Ellen Roberts (who was previously married to David Martin VanBuren). Hiram and Martha had 10 children. Hiram was the father of 21 children.

Upon his death, according to family oral history given to me by his grandson, Hiram was laid to rest beside his second wife Martha. This so infuriated one of Emmaline's children that his headstone was broken and thrown into the creek near the cemetery; thus, there is not a headstone to mark his grave.
