Actress, Comedienne, Writer. Born Caroline Mary Aherne, she was a comedy actress best known for her roles on the television shows "The Mrs. Merton Show", and "The Royle Family". After studying drama at Liverpool Polytechnic, she began performing on the Manchester comedy circuit before moving to television. In her early days of television, she created the character of Mrs. Merton which she would later develop into a television show. Besides "The Mrs. Merton Show" and "The Royle Family", her other television credits would include "The Fast Show", "Strange Hill High", "Sunshine", and "Mrs. Merton and Malcolm". Besides writing for the shows that she appeared on, she also wrote for other television programs. She later was the narrator on the reality show "Gogglebox". She was married to Joy Division/New Order bassist Peter Hook from 1994 to 1997. In her later years, she experienced various health problems and in April of 2016, it was announced that she was battling throat cancer.
