Funeral services for James A. Barney, 74, Sterling street, World War I veteran, were held this morning (Wednesday) at the Burr and Green funeral home with St James Church, officiating. The body was placed in St. James vault for spring burial in the Fort Covington cemetery. Mr. Barney died suddenly Sunday afternoon at the home of his brother, William A., with whom he had made his home. He had spent the summer months at his camp at Black Lake. Surviving besides his brother are two sisters Miss Edith Barney, Gouveneur, and Miss Mary Barney, Lisbon. He was born June 7, 1888 at Fort Covington, a son of Alexander and Martha Noreault Barney and attended schools at Fort Covington.
He worked for the Aluminum company of America at Massena until joining the army May 24, 1918 at Potsdam. He was discharged Dec. 24, 1918 to return to ALCOA He later operated the West Main hotel at Gouverneur with his brother until 1951 when the business was sold to Joseph Canali of Gouveneur. Mr. Barney at this time retired. He was a member of the American Legion post of Massena.
