Lavern 'Vern' Wittenburg of New Ulm, MN, and formerly of Denver, Iowa, died Tuesday evening, July 5, at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm of natural causes.

Vern was born on April 4, 1927, in Maxfield Township, Iowa, the son of Fred 'Fritz' and Elda (Seegers) Wittenburg. Vern grew up in Denver and in 1944, graduated from Denver High School. Following graduation, he joined the United States Navy and served in the Pacific during World War II.

On June 27, 1948, Vern was united in marriage to Lila 'Jean' Frickson in Waterloo, Iowa.

The couple made their home in Denver, Iowa, and operated Wittenburg Hardware. They then moved to West Union, Iowa, where Vern worked for the Iowa DOT, returning to Denver to own and operate Wittenburg Hardware and later Wittenburg Lumber.

They retired in 1993 and moved to Shell Rock, Iowa. Vern then worked as a security guard at Nestles (formerly Carnation) in Waverly, until 2009.

In 2011, Vern moved to New Ulm, MN. He lived first at Ridgeway on German and then at Oak Hills Living Center.

Vern was well-known as an avid fisherman. His catfish bait recipe remains a secret. He enjoyed history, chess, cards, and sharing geography tidbits with his family.

Vern is survived by his daughters and their husbands, Vivian (Stephen) Hart of Champlin, Minnesota, Joyce (Wayne) Buehner of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, Jill (Tony) Enyart of Champlin, Minnesota, Karen (Rod) Gienau of Denver, Iowa, and Linda (Vance) Koelling of Hudson, Iowa; 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; and his brother Don (Esther) of Denver, Iowa.

Vern was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jean, and his parents.

Visitation will be at Kaiser Corson Funeral Home in Denver on Friday, July 8, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Memorial services will be held at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Denver at 10:30 am, on Saturday, July 9.
