SHERMAN DAY had the distinction of being a grandson of Roger Sherman, signer of the Declaration of Independence. Born in New Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut, he was a son of Jeremiah Day, 1773-1867, who was President of Yale from 1817-1846. When Sherman earned his A. B. from Yale in 1826, his father presented him his degree.
Day's achievements are long and impressive. Among them: Merchant in New York and Philadelphia; Engineer in Ohio and Indiana; Civil Mining Engineer in California, 1852-1853; Surveyor of wagon routes across the Sierras for the State of California, 1855; State Senator from California, 1855-1858; Secretary of Interior as government agent and superintendent, 1863; U. S. Surveyor General for California, 1868-1871. He was also a professor of mine construction and surveying and was affiliated with mines at San Jose, New Almaden, Folsom and Oakland.
In addition, Day is known as the author of HISTORICAL COLLECTIONS OF THE STATE OF PENNSYLVANIA published in 1843. His work includes histories for each of the counties in Pennsylvania plus statewide images he produced.
Sherman married Elizabeth Ann King of Hartford County, Connecticut on August 27, 1832. The marriage took place in Westfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts. They are found in Kings County, New York in the 1850 census, then in Oakland, Alameda County, California in 1860, 1870 and 1880. Sherman and Elizabeth were parents of six children, as follows:
