Samuel enlisted ( took his Oath ) into the U. S. Army on May 11, 1918 in Missoula, Montana. And served first as a Private in the 8th Infantry Division, Company M of the 62nd. With his final assignment to the Headquarters Company of the 31st Infantry. He was Honorably Discharged on December 26, 1919 after 18 1/2 months of service.

Samuel was working as a Farmer for Mr. Thomas Poole in the Polson area of Montana in June of 1917, he was single and 25 years old according to his WWI Draft registration.

Samuel was 44 years old at the time of his death. He had only been living and working in a mine in Goldfield, Esmeralda County, Nevada for about six months. He was crushed when rock came down onto his back which damaged his vertebra on March 7, 1937. He was transported to the Hospital in Las Vegas where he died of a Coronary Embolism a few days later.

Samuel's headstone was requested by a member of the American Legion Post # 8 in Las Vegas, Nevada shortly after his death.
