Captain Hance Hamilton, Sr. was born about 1695 in County Londonderry, North Ireland the son of John and Mary Ann Wren Hamilton. He married about 1715 in North Ireland, Ann Campbell the daughter of Alexander and Ann Whitfield Campbell.
In August 1729 Captain Hance Hamilton led a Fleet from North ireland to New Castle, Delaware with 140 families. Almost imediately almost all removed to then Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and founded the Marsh Creek Settlement which was located where Gettisburg, Adams County now stand.
He died on 27 January 1772 in Maqnellen, York County, Pennsylvania at the age of 77.
