Isla Mae Hallman, age 90, of Pocahontas, Iowa passed away July 23rd, 2016, at the Manor in Pocahontas, Iowa.

Isla Mae Hudek was born October 2, 1925 in Pocahontas, Iowa to Ralph and Ellen Mae (Yocum) Hudek. She grew up on a farm just north of Pocahontas with her nine siblings, and graduated from Pocahontas High School in 1944. She loved sports and excelled in basketball. After graduation, she attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and then moved to California to pursue employment opportunities while living with her aunt.

On November 11, 1946, Isla was united in marriage to Charles Leo Hallman at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Pocahontas. Together they were blessed with eight children: Theresa, Leo, Beth, Barb, Mary, Martha, Mark and Kathy. The family lived on a farm west of Pocahontas where Isla was a homemaker for many years while also helping her husband with the farm work, and tending a big garden. Isla loved children and valued education, and in 1967 she began working for Headstart, an agency that provides learning opportunities to pre-schoolers. After retiring, she continued to work on special projects for Upper Des Moines Opportunities, Inc., the agency that runs Head Start. Charles and Isla were married for 50 years before his passing in 1997.

As a member of the Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church in Pocahontas, Isla was very active in the Ladies Society and was a past member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She also took an active role in helping to preserve the Bohemian heritage of the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church which is now listed on the national register of historic places. In later years, she represented Pocahontas County on the advisory council of the Elderbridge Agency on Aging.

Isla loved flowers and spent many hours tending to her colorful garden. She also had a knack for nurturing weak plants back to a thriving healthy existence. A pastime during the winter was crocheting, and often visitors left her home with a home-made dishcloth.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children Theresa (Rolly) Yost Omaha, NE; Leo (Carol) Hallman, Pocahontas, IA; Beth Finch (friend Larry Van Roekel), Hull, IA; Barbara (Gary) Norton, Norwalk, IA; Mary (John) Stoffel, Omaha, NE; Martha (Dan) Nealon, Omaha, NE; Mark (Bridget) Hallman, Pocahontas, IA and Kath Carter, Chicago, IL; 22 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; siblings Norma (Lee) Pletke, Lynchburg, VA; Betty Bollard, Pocahontas, IA; Albert Hudek, Council Bluffs, IA; Ellen (Chuck) Kaipust, Omaha, NE; Dan (Sally) Hudek, Sloan, IA; sister-in-law Mary Clayton, Pocahontas, IA; many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
