Betty Ann Hudek was born on May 11, 1931, on a family farm near Pocahontas. She was the daughter of Ralph and Mae (Yocum) Bollard. She graduated from Pocahontas High School in 1949. Betty was united in marriage to Larry “Hank” Bollard on September 13, 1953, at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Pocahontas, Iowa. In addition to raising their six children, Betty worked as a switchboard operator, at Brown’s Grocery Store, as secretary at the school, at Sinek Eye Clinic and as manager of the Pocahontas Golf Club. Larry passed away in 1999 and Betty continued to make her home in Pocahontas.
Betty was a member of Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church, Catholic Ladies Society, Legion Woman’s Auxiliary, Garden Club and the Red Hat Society. Betty was a Hospice board member and volunteer for many years and she received the Governor’s Volunteer Award. Betty belonged to the bowling and golf leagues and helped with the Hospital Auxiliary waffle breakfasts. Betty was a prolific crocheter, over the years. She made and gave away many afgans to family and friends. She enjoyed bridge club and hosting her many friends.
Survivors include her children, Jim (Susanne) Bollard of Des Moines, Jerry (Teresa) Bollard of Spirit Lake, Joan DeWall of Pocahontas, Jeff (Betty) Bollard of Pella and John (Dawn) Bollard of Oakdale, Minnesota; son-in-law, Al Woods of Springville; 8 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter; sisters, Norma (Lee) Pletke and Ellen Kaipust; brothers, Albert Hudek and Dan (Sally) Hudek and sister-in-law, Mary (Clifford) Clayton.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Larry; daughter, Jill Woods; daughter-in-law, Lori Bollard; brothers, Don Hudek and Ralph Hudek Jr. and sisters, June Ahmann, Isla Mae Hallman and Harriet Byers.
