Anna MacLennan (AKA McLennan or McClellan) married Robert Ellis Paxton on 20 May 1872 in Greenville, Mississippi (see below).

Robert E Paxton married Anna "McClellan" on 20 May 1872* according to Wm McClung Paxton's book, The Paxtons: Their Origin in Scotland, and Their Migrations Through England and Ireland, to the Colony of Pennsylvania, Whence They Moved South and West, and Found Homes in Many States and Territories..., 1903, MO, p 270. However, the family bible (see photo on husband's site) lists Ann "McLennan" on the same date in Greenville, Miss. The State of Mississippi, Washington County, issued a license (see photo on husband's site) for them to marry on 17 May 1872 and crossed off her surname and rewote "Maclennan" beneath it.

In the few early Mississippi records I found McClelland marriages, but no McClellan or similar. However, this data has not aided my search.

No luck finding her parents on the census. I suspect multiple spellings of her surname make it more difficult and I tried many.

On the 13 Jun 1880 Arcola, Washington Co., Mississippi census, I found farmer R.E. Paxton, 35; keeps house: Anna, 35, sons: Charley, 4; Robert, 2 and McNutt, 3/12 in Feb, all Mississippi born. Anna's dad was born in Scotland and mom in Mississippi. Robert's parents were Virginia born.

The 1838 Alexander McNutt Paxton Family Bible Record births page (1 of 2) lists on the bottom of page, "Emily Isabella Paxton daughter of R E & Anna M Paxton born Aug 1st 1892 (the 9 is hart to read).

On the 1900 New Bell Warren Co., Mississippi census, I found Robert E Paxton, 60, born Apr 1840; wife Anna M, 60, Apr 1840, had 7 kids, 6 living; sons or daughters: Chas T, 25, Jan 1875; Robt E, 22, Jun 1877; James M, 20, Nov 1879; Emma R, 17, Dec 1882; Lucy B, 15, May 1885 and Theado V, 10, Mar 1890, all born in Mississippi. Her parents were both Mississippi born.

On the 1910 Vicksburg, Mississippi census, I found widow Anna M Paxton, 65, MS born, dad in Virginia, mom in Scotland, she had 6 kids, 6 living. She resides with son James M., 30; daughter Lucy Kelly, 24, married 2 yrs, 1 kid, living; grandson George Kelly, 10/12 (hard Mississippi born.

From 1880 to 1910 the census birth locations of Anna's parents changed from Mississippi, to VIrginia and to Scotland.

NECROLOGICAL. Mrs. Anna M. Paxton, aged 72 years, died Sunday at her residence in the county. Three sons, Robert, J.M. and T. V. Paxton, survive her. Another son, Charles T Paxton, died on Dec 21. Mrs. Paxton also leaves two daughters, Mrs. George Kelly and Mrs. Lawrence Fergason. The funeral of Mrs. Paxton took place this morning at 11 o'clock from the Crawford Street Methodist church, Rev. T. B. Holloman officiating. Mrs. Paxton was a splendid Christian woman. She was always thoughtful and considerate and her presence will be sadly missed in her home circle.
