Reported age at time of death was 63 years (grave inscription) or 60 years (obituary, burial record), so evidently born about 1819 or 1822. Married 10 JAN 1837 in Passaic County, New Jersey, to Elias H. DAY (middle initial "H." said to be for name "Harrison" on FindaGrave, but some family trees on Ancestry dot com show "Halsey"). Engaged in the business of dressmaking. Died at her residence on upper Broad Street after a brief illness. Survived by three children, Mrs. Frank C. JOHNSON, Mrs. Frank LANDEN, and Mr. Henry C. DAY. Funeral service conducted from the First Presbyterian Church.

Mary Jane Galer's list of persons interred in the New Cemetery area of Linwood shows: Mrs. A. DAY died aged 60 years of cancer; buried 15 MAY 1883 in Section 9, Lot 985 1/2 - Sexton Abraham ODOM. [Galer's source was the sexton's card file (an index). The original burial entry in the sexton's ledger book omits a place of birth but mentions she was buried as a resident of Columbus, Georgia (so probably died there) and gives location as Section 2, Lots 976 1/2 and 985 1/2.]

"Death of Mrs. M. A. DAY // The many friends of Mrs. M. A. DAY will be grieved to learn of her death, which occurred yesterday morning at 11:30 o'clock. She was about 60 years of age and had resided in this city about thirty years. She was a well-known dressmaker and a noble Christian lady. She was greatly beloved by those who knew her well, for her noble traits of character and generous impulses. She was a consistent member of the Presbyterian church, and her long life was devoted to doing the will of the Master. // The funeral will take place at 10 o'clock this morning from the Presbyterian church." [Columbus (GA) Enquirer-Sun newspaper, Tuesday, 15 MAY 1883, p. 4.]

1850 census of Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia, shows Mrs. M. A. DAY (30 NY) Mant [? = Hat?] Maker, Frances L. DAY (10 NY), & E. Henry DAY (8 GA).

1860 census of Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia, shows Mrs. M. A. DAY (40 NJ), Milliner, $1000; Fanney (20 NY); Henry (18 GA); and Julia KENNEDY (16 GA).

If the inscribed grave monument is in fact where this woman was buried, the location reported for the burial is incorrect (unless the grave was subsequently moved). In the first place, the half lot corresponding to 985 1/2 is 971 1/2, not 976 1/2 (which it appears would be paired with 920 1/2). Mrs. DAY"s grave is marked in Lot 145 of Section B in Dolores Autry's "Historic Linwood Cemetery" book (edited by Lea Dowd et al.), Volume 1. Autry B-145 takes in city lots 926, 973, 973 1/2 and 983 1/2. F. C. JOHNSON paid $15 each for Lots 926 and 973 (date of sale not reported), and paid $5 each on 08 FEB 1876 for Lots 973 1/2 and 983 1/2.

Others buried here include: Frank C. JOHNSON, buried 03 APR 1885 (aged 68 years), unmarked); Joanna (DAY) JOHNSON (1838--1905); Janie (BISHOP) JOHNSON (1889--1918); Clifford Ross JOHNSON (1869--1929); Lottie (MOON) JOHNSON (1878--1975); Early Hurt JOHNSON (1878--1947); infant daughter of R. Brice & Betty CARSON (b. & d. 21 JUL 1953); and Louis M. JOHNSON, buried 21 FEB 1954 (aged 83 years), unmarked. Autry reports one adult-sized and one infant-sized brick ledger, neither of which has any identifying markings; the adult-sized one is presumably for Frank C.JOHNSON (d. 1885).

There has been some confusion between this person and another buried at Linwood. Two women, both recorded as Mrs. M. A. DAY and both near the same age, were buried close to the same day but one year apart. M. Amada DAY died aged 63 years and was buried 04 MAY 1882 in city 1-4. Mary Ann (McGRAW) DAY died aged 60 years (obit, burial record) or 63 years (inscription) and was buried 15 MAY 1883 in city 2-983 1/2.
