In the 1760's Joseph's parents moved from Maryland to Fayette County, Pa., with Brashear and Brown family members.
Joseph BRASHEAR was born on the Brashear family farm in Redstone Twp., Fayette County, Pa., near the town of Brownsville, a son of William BRASHEAR and Sarah Ann RAY BRASHEAR.
In 1779, Joseph came to Bullitt Co., Kentucky. His family settled near the mouth of Floyd's Creek on 400 acres.
Joseph's Father, William with a party of eighteen to nineteen men built an early fort at mouth of Floyd's Fork near bank of Salt River. Fort known as "Brashear's Station" was on part of the old "Wilderness Road".
Joseph's father was killed by Indians in 1781. At the time of William's death, Bullit County was still a part of Jefferson County, KY.
Joseph married Elizabeth Cummins on April 12, 1796 in Washington County, Ky. Elizabeth died 25 days after giving birth to their son Joseph. Joseph married Charlotte Wheeler Claycomb widow of George Claycomb in December 1819.
Joseph's home was located in Breckenridge County, on the road between Sample and Hardinsburg.

"Brashear's Station" was the first such station built between Falls of the Ohio (Louisville) and Harrodsburg. It was built to protect the salt works and it's workers from Indian attacks and was a haven for pioneer hunters and travelers. Later renamed Froman's Station (1780's). Also known as Salt River Garrison (Post), garrisoned by the KY state militia in 1791 with 10 men.
