William Burke enlisted in the Sixth Regiment of the Continental Army in the spring of 1778 and served until Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown in 1781. He died on May 18, 1803, and it is this inscription, as well as the initials "W.B." that identifies the gravestone of this Revolutionary War veteran. Next to his grave is a sunken area with a crude fieldstone marker that is probably the grave of William's wife, Susannah Sweeney Burke. There are about 25-30 graves in the cemetery and include members of the Burke, Shaw and Benear families. The land where the cemetery is located was probably owned by William Burke
