Major League Baseball Player. For eleven seasons (1951 to 1961), he played at the shortstop position with the Chicago White Sox, St. Louis Browns, Philadelphia/Kansas City Athletics and New York Yankees. Born Joseph Paul DeMaestri, he attended Tamalpais High School in California, prior to being signed by the Boston Red Sox as an amateur free agent in 1946. He was selected by the White Sox as a Rule Five player in 1950 and made his Major League debut with Chicago on April 19, 1951. After he was acquired by the Philadelphia, he became the Athletics starting shortstop and remained at that position for seven seasons (1953 to 1959), which included the franchise's relocation to Kansas City. He distinguished himself in 1957, when he achieved all star status. He experienced a run at the American League Pennant in 1960 with the Yankees and recorded a hit during the 1960 World Series against the Pirates. Following his retirement from baseball, he worked for his family's distribution company.
