William, son of the late William A. Mentz and wife Emma, nee Brumker, was born Dec. 6, 1935, in Affton. Bill received his education at Port Hudson Catholic School. He served his country in the United States Army from 1958 to 1961. Bill was united in marriage to Marilyn Kleekamp May 1, 1971, at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church, Washington. The couple made their home in Leslie. Bill was employed in construction and also did small engine repair. Many will remember him from his band,^Big Bill and his Country Music Makers. He was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Mentz, nee Kleekamp; his mother-in-law, Theola Berger, Union; two sisters, Laverne Schmidt, Union, and Joyce Mentz, Washington; two brothers-in-law, Dennis Kleekamp, Union, and Ronnie Kleekamp, Washington; one sister-in-law, Judy Keasler, Kokomo, Ind.; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Norma Bowen; and one brother, Joe Mentz.
A funeral Mass was held Friday, Sept. 2, at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, Port Hudson, with the Rev. James Foster officiating.
Burial followed in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Activities Center at the New Haven Care Center.
The Mentz family was served by Oltmann Funeral Home, Union.
