Mr. Mentz was born Jan. 6, 1944, in Leslie, the son of William Mentz and wife Emma, nee Brumker.
He received his education at Holy Family School in Port Hudson and graduated from Washington High School in 1962.
Mr. Mentz served his country in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1969.
He had been the owner and operator of Mentz Auto Repair in Union since 1981.
On April 14, 2005, he was united in marriage to Darla McCollum in Union.
Mr. Mentz was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Darla Mentz, Owensville; three sons, Scott Mentz and wife Lisa, Washington, Jeff Mentz and wife Dawn, Beaufort, and Tony Mentz and wife Anne, Gerald; one daughter, Samantha Shomaker and husband Ryan, Union; three stepchildren, Brandy Peth and husband Jason, Sullivan, Jody McCollum and Clinton McCollum, both of Union; 10 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; three sisters, LaVerne Schmitt, Union, Joyce Mentz and Norma Bowen, both of Washington; one brother, Bill Mentz and wife Marilyn, Leslie; his special nephew, Steve Elbert, Virginia state; the mother of his children, Joyce Borgmann, nee Elbert; other relatives and many friends.
A funeral Mass was held Thursday, May 8, at Immaculate Conception Church, Union. The Rev. Matthew Mitas officiated.
Burial was in the church cemetery.
Memorials to Exceptional Equestrians or St. Vincent de Paul Society are preferred.
The family was served by Oltmann Funeral Home, Union.
