Betty L. Gruwell, 86 of Grand Island, died Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at CHI Health St. Francis, Grand Island.
Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 3, 2016 at St. Pauls Lutheran Church with the Rev. Edgar Schambach officiating. Burial will be in Aurora Cemetery, Aurora, Nebraska. Apfel Funeral Home is caring for the family.
Betty L. Gruwell was born, May 30, 1930 in Smith County, Kansas the daughter of Arlie & Grace (White) Gates. She grew up on a farm in Smith County, Kansas and received her education at District 85 Tynere School and Franklin High School.
She was united in marriage to Herbert Gruwell, November 13, 1946 in Phillipsburg, KS. The couple resided in various communities in Nebraska and Kansas before making their home in Aurora in 1972 where she was employed at Memorial Hospital as a CNA.
She was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church, Danish Sisterhood, and the Betty Bunch.
She loved playing cards, shopping but her greatest joy came from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s activities. She was a wonderful caregiver and enjoyed volunteering at Long Term Care, for she loved working with elderly.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son & daughter-in-law, Alan & Becky Gruwell of Grand Island; son-in-law, Alan Toll of Salina, KS; three daughters & son-in-law; Diana Honore of Grand Island, Linda & Roger Madsen of Lincoln, NE, Connie Gruwell of Lincoln; 10 grandchildren; & 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Herbert; one daughter, Janet Toll; grandson, Terry Larkowski; and a brother, Everett Gates.
