Albatross was a Standardbred Champion racehorse and prepotent sire who was inducted into both the United States and Canadian Harness Racing Halls of Fame. On the track from age two through four under the training and driving of Harry Harvey and Stanley Dancer, Albatross won 59 of 71 career starts and was voted United States Horse of the Year in 1971 and 1972. His wins include a number of the most prestgious races in North American including the Cane Pace, Prix d'Été, Adios Pace, Rooselvelt Pace, Canadian Pacing Derby, two editions of the American Classic Open Pace and a heat in the Little Brown Jug. He was retired to stud at Hanover Shoe Farms having won more money than any horse in harness racing history and the holder of the world record time of 1:54.3 for a mile accomplished in the Governor's Cup at Sportsman's Park in Chicago. As a sire he was the Leading Standardbred Sire in North America five times (1981-84, 1986) and the Leading Standardbred Broodmare Sire in North America fourteen times (1987-2000). The most famous of his sons was Niatross, a Hall of Fame Champion regarded by many as the greatest harness horse in history whose time trial mark of 1:49.1 was the fastest mile ever run, breaking the previous world record by 2 4/5 seconds. Albatross died at the age of 30 in 1998.
