Politician. First elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly in 1874, James Munro held various seats in the legislature until 1890 when he successfully lead a no-confidence motion against the government of Duncan Gillies to become the 15th Premier of Victoria. At the same time, through his companies, the Federal Bank and the Federal Building Society, he was also heavily involved in the speculative land boom going on throughout the colony. The boom ended with a financial crash in late 1891 and Munro resigning as Premier in February of 1892. He was declared bankrupt in February of 1893 and ended his working career as an estate agent in Armadale.
